The City of Williams Lake has started a Holiday Campaign by making a generous contribution of $50,000.
The campaign is to help raise funds for its Endowment Fund which was established back in 2021.
Manager of Economic Development, Beth Veenkamp said since then, the City has been consistently growing it and it’s now at $375,000.
“We’re pushing our way to get to the million dollar mark which is when we think we’ll be able to start dispersing the interest earned off the Fund annually so that’s our goal at the moment,” Veenkamp said.
Once the fund grows large enough, grants will be offered to community groups and organizations in Williams Lake.
“We are still working out the exact details of how we will disperse the funds but it will definitely be put to use for community endeavours.” Veenkamp said, “It will be a fund that all the community will be able to apply for, kind of like the City’s Grant In Aid and Fee for Service contracts like we currently have.”
While the Prince George Community Foundation provides administrative support, the City of Williams Lake is responsible for growing the fund and retains control over how the interest income will be spent in the community.
Veenkamp noted that they have one private donor who has been very generous and has helped accelerate the growth of the fund.
“We know that there are other people like that out there in the community who really want to leave a legacy in the community and we just want to assure people that all the funds that are raised from Williams Lake will absolutely stay to the benefit of Williams Lake,”Veenkamp noted.
