Acting Mayor in Williams Lake calls on Council to take a second look at controversial Safe Consumption Site.
Scott Nelson filed a Notice of Motion that will force the City Council and Staff to revisit the information and presentation on overdose awareness from Cianna O’Connor and Interior Health.
Councillor Nelson was not in attendance at a past meeting that brought forward the recommendation, but was the only dissenting voice on Council when the topic of a Safe Consumption Site when the recommendation came before the council at the regular meeting on Oct. 8.
Nelson said in Council on Oct. 22, that Mayor Rathor “was going to discuss it with staff as well” when Rathor is back from his holidays. Nelson noted that there has been a lot of discussion about a safe injection site throughout the community.
“The reason I can do that is because I couldn’t as a Councillor,” Nelson addressed the meeting. “But as Acting Mayor, you can use the Mayor’s office to bring that back, so, that’s the notice of motion that I will file.”
With the notice of motion filed, Nelson says that this will give the “Council the opportunity two weeks out” to discuss the idea of a safe consumption site.
Until then, no further action from The City or Interior Health can be acted upon.
