Crypto Currency Fraud Scams Reported In The South Cariboo

100 Mile House RCMP have received reports from residents over the last month of crypto currency fraud.

Sargeant Brian Lamb said the scams involve a call from a person posing to be a legitimate investment firm or websites that appear to be legitimate as it relates to crypto currency investments.

“Persons who have reported when attempting to access funds from these companies are advised to send money in order to have their invested funds released and when completed, contact is ended with no additional means of access or refund of money.” Lamb said, “Other incidents have involved one-time investments where the funds provided disappear soon after the transfer.”

Police ask residents to be aware of these types of fraud and verify the actual business legitimacy, speak with your financial institution to determine if the investment is safe, and do not provide personal information over the phone or internet.

“Reports received are random and are not linked to one specific phone number or website,” Lamb said, “more often than not Police are limited in what can be done to progress investigations due to locations often not being known or overseas.”
