Interior Health has brought in a new Spiritual Care Practitioner to Williams Lake’s Cariboo Memorial Hospital.
The role addresses issues of self identity, meaning, purpose, and how one relates to the world around themselves.
Thandazani Mhlanga says work needs to be done for people to have a better understanding of the role.
“This role has not existed, at least at this site, so there’s a whole lot of education that needs to be done.” says Mhlanga
“There’s a lot of misunderstanding out there, even within the hospital on what a Spiritual Care Practitioner does so, the education piece of it has been very big.”
Mhlanga added that the role doesn’t primarily deal in the realm of religion, even though it can be a way to express one’s spirituality.
He says having the position is important to have in a community like Williams Lake with the hospital being a place for every individual.
A hospital needs a system that contributes to the whole experience, not only physically, but also care for things valuable to patients.
Mhlanga says the human approach is what makes it vital for a diverse community.
