A Cariboo event to celebrate the return of the Horsefly sockeye will be held this weekend.
This annual festival draws visitors from all parts of the Region who come out to watch the return of the sockeye salmon to their spawning grounds on the Horsefly River.
Event Coordinator Dina Stephenson said it’s a great way for families to spend the day together learning about the watershed and the work that goes into protecting it, the fish and the wildlife.
“It’s very educational. We have a lot of stewardship partners who will have information booths set up from the UNBC-Quesnel River research Centre, the Rivershed Society of BC, WildSafe BC, Department of Fisheries and Ocean Canada, Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society, just to mention a few.” Stephenson said, “Tomorrow afternoon (September 7) at 1 we’ll have a traditional Indigenous salmon blessing by the river which is always very nice.”
Stephenson noted there’s so much to see and do during the Horsefly River Salmon Festival that includes Gyotaku, which is traditional Japanese fish painting that is very popular kids of all ages.
The Horsefly River Salmon Festival is a free event happening this Saturday and Sunday (September 7 & 8) from ten until four and everyone is welcome.
