Parkinson Superwalk taking place in 100 Mile House this weekend

Residents in 100 Mile House are invited to support the 8th annual Parkinson Superwalk this weekend.

The walk aims to raise funds for access to medications and treatments, with better support for caregivers and specialized education for healthcare professionals.

Organizer, Philip Konrad says an increase in awareness is also important.

“The government needs to be aware of it, and I think they have been in the last half a dozen years, because a couple of the Parkinson related items they’ve agreed to fund.” says Konrad.

“One’s called duodopa. Very expensive treatment for people that are pretty bad off, and the government agreed to fund that.”

Konrad added that the disease affects people differently, and isn’t the just tremors or shakes that are commonly associated with it.

He noted that a friend of his has Parkinson’s, but only affects him from the inside, and says there are other symptoms.

The walk is taking place at Centennial Park on Saturday, September 7th, with registration at 1:00pm and start time at 1:30, and will go for 10 minutes.

Pre-registration, where to donate, and walk route can also be found on the Parkinson Society British Columbia website here.
