Cariboo residents will benefit from provincial funding given to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The province is providing the Society with 20 million dollars over the next two years.
Mona Rozdale, Director of Cancer Support Integration, says it is called the Cancer Travel and Accommodation Services program.
“If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and you need to travel to receive care or if you’re worried about the cost of getting to treatment appointments we’re able to potentially help you. It’s really simple to access our program, you can visit us at cancer.ca or call us at 1-888-939-3333.”
Rozdale says funding is available for a few different things.
“The funding is applicable even if you are travelling less than 25 kilometres to your treatment site, or if you are travelling further than 25 kilometres. We have our air transportation and partnership with Hope Air. We provide ground transportation with our Wheels of Hope program, and we have accommodation support, so there are four lodges in BC and particularly in Prince George we have the Kordyban Lodge.”
Rozdale says the other lodges are located in Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria.
She says the program has been very successful.
“Since the program launched we have been able to support patients in over 240 communities, and for the northern region we’ve been able to support patients from about 14 communities reaching just shy of 800 patients in the north.”
Rozdale says includes patients from Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.
She says these numbers represent individuals who have been positively impacted by this support through a really challenging time.
Rozdale says they hope more people will access this program in light of the recent funding.
