Central Cariboo Search and Rescue on standby after Chilcotin River landslide

Central Cariboo Search and Rescue attended this mornings landslide that injured one person.

Member and Public Relations Coordinator, Debra Bortolussi says they believe the landslide at the Chilcotin River, near Farwell Canyon, had occurred at around midnight.

Bortolussi says one male was injured during the landslide.

“In the early morning today, someone was able to spot him and call for help.” says Bortolussi.

“Our team went out via helicopter with two members to help the injured male. We went with Frontline Helicopters to the area and stretchered the patient out.”

Bortolussi says the patient was handed off to BC Emergency Health Services, and is in stable condition receiving treatment at the Williams Lake Cariboo Memorial Hospital.

The man had been out rafting before hand, and after setting up camp he heard rumbling starting the landslide, and during the process of him and his dog running, the man was injured.

At the moment, there’s no word on where the dog is.

She added that at this point they’re on standby for potential evacuation orders in the area, and are aware this may not be the last rescue of the day.

With a significant slide and the river dried up, there’s the potential of rafters stranded or injured.

Bortolussi encourages everyone to stay out of the affected areas, and until professionals fully assess it, they don’t know what the damages are or if other areas may slide.

She says it remains a developing situation, and is a very significant slide.
