Carboo region’s unemployment rate hits 19 month low

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region is the lowest it has been since November of 2022.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says “the June unemployment rate came in at 4.5%, compared to 4.7% in May and 8 percent in June of 2023.”

The jobless rate was 4.2 % in November of 2022.

Ferrao says there were 32-hundred more people working in the region last month compared to a year ago.

“Basically the increases were in services and more specifically in wholesale and retail trade, healthcare and social assistance and a bit in accommodation and food services. There were declines however in the natural resources industry.”

The national unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in June, up from 6.2 in May.

BC’s jobless rate was 5.2 percent, down from 5.6, and only Manitoba was lower at 5.1 percent.

Provincial unemployment rates:

Manitoba 5.1%
British Columbia 5.2%
Saskatchewan 5.5%
Quebec 5.7%
Nova Scotia 6.6%
Ontario 7.0%
Alberta 7.1%
New Brunswick 7.7%
