The BC Wildfire Service is preparing for an increase for wildfire activity.
Natasha Broznitsky is a fire information officer with the Cariboo Fire Centre.
“Essentially because we received quite a fair amount of lightning yesterday (Tuesday) and it could be that there are more fires that are not able to be detected yet. Lightning can ignite small surface fuels which can then cause a small amount of fuel to smolder for days or weeks before the weather heats up at which point it flares up and becomes detectable-these are known as holdover fires.”
Broznitsky says they’re also expecting the possibility of more lightning on Friday followed by a hot, dry weekend. She says they are also are reminding the public to report any open burning violations and abandoned campfires.
Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are currently prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.
From April 1 to June 20, 2017, the Cariboo Fire Centre responded to 41 fires, 34 of which were human-caused that have burned 208 hectares.
Wildfires can be reported by calling 1 800 663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
